Nest at Glasshouse

Mixology North23: Project of the Year

Nest, located in the Glasshouse building at Bruntwood SciTech’s Alderley Park, represents a thoughtful blend of sustainability, wellbeing, and innovative design. With a lack of natural light the project presented a challenge, which the design team embraced, using it to create a unique subterranean atmosphere that is both functional and inspiring.

The space stands out with its carefully crafted lighting features, designed to enhance the environment and promote a sense of calm. The incorporation of biophilic design elements and bespoke artwork brings nature indoors, fostering a connection to the outdoors despite the space’s underground location. A key aspect of the design is the bespoke wellness suite, which offers a serene environment ideal for practices such as yoga, pilates, or meditation.

Sustainability and wellbeing were at the forefront of the project’s philosophy, reflected not only in the aesthetics but also in its operational design. The building has achieved both the WELL Building Standard, which focuses on the health and wellness of its occupants, and the US Green Building Council’s LEED certification, which emphasises environmentally conscious construction and design.

The lighting, provided by LDL, played an essential role in supporting the project’s overarching goals. The luminaires were chosen to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions while also contributing to the positive impact on occupant wellbeing. This commitment to sustainability is seen in both the selection of materials and the overall approach to energy-efficient design.

Overall, Nest showcases how thoughtful design can transform a challenging space into a vibrant, sustainable, and wellness-focused environment, perfectly aligned with the principles of people and planet.
